This validates what I've been toying around with for my Substack. I have a lot to say and a lot of content I want to import from another platform, but didn't want to spam my readers. I've just learned how to properly use Sections as well so my content is categorized nicely.
Posting without sending emails allows you to post long content daily (for SEO purposes and search engines). Notes are short posts that aren't really evergreen to get traffic or exposure.
Thank you, Burk. I am new to Substack, and while I want to post regularly (several times a week), I don't want to email every piece I write. Instead, I will carefully curate which ones make it to a newsletter, while these posts might link to further pieces for reference.
I think it's great to have the option not to send an email to subscribers every time we post. Something I wonder though-- are we all being nuts giving so much content to Substack instead of putting things on our own sites. Any thoughts on that?
Needed to hear this! I knew it was an option, but thinking about certain posts as blog posts instead of an email newsletter does give me a lot of (mental) freedom.
Wow 🤩 what a brilliant strategy, Burk. I don’t think I’d have the time or energy to write sustainably everyday but it could work even if I did write a post 2-3 days a week right?
I appreciate your take, and I really wish that SS would offer a “push to mobile app only” button, but here’s what works for me: I publish Monday to Friday and sometimes on Saturdays. Every one of those goes out to my subscribers’ inbox, and my growth has been exponential.
However, yesterday, for example, I published three articles in one day after the second one I really felt like now it’s time to just put it out there, and I did not send it to their inbox.
I just don’t understand why there aren’t more refined publishing options like

Such a great strategy, Burk. I suggested this to a client and his publication was transformed into a powerhouse. Grew his revenue by 9000%!!!!
So are you saying posting, without email, is better than using notes?
No. Totally different thing.

Thank you. I’ve been postponing publishing for this reason, now I have the hack.
I just recently realized I didn't have to send every post to my email list on Substack.
Interesting. Curious as to why not use Notes instead of daily posts?
I post long content daily. That's for SEO and search engines.
Notes are to drive traffic to those stories or my profile.
Notes are not really good for search engines and SEO.
Exactly what I was wondering.
maybe you should make another segment for people who want to receive every post you know
I thought about that too. Might try it

Thank God for that!
I thought it was just me.
Publish every day (now at day 59).
One email a week called ‘Stories for a Sunday’ with links to each new post.
Damn fine idea & so glad you do it too.
(So I just had to subscribe, didn’t I?)
I found it to be a great strategy that doesn't overwhelm the reader. Perfect.
I absolutely love this idea, especially since my goal is to become a better writer.

Yes that’s a good point. And that’s why I have a custom domain connected to Substack. And medium as well.
Very helpful, thanks.

Great info. Thanks!!

I just don’t understand why there aren’t more refined publishing options like
sent to all,
sent to paid,
sent to founding members,
or just publish via app.
