When undertaking any long-term project, it can be easy to become discouraged by focusing too intently on the end result.
We envision some final “perfect” goal and then feel frustrated when our current efforts fall short.
In my 15-year online career, I’ve been there countless times. Giving up. Removing all I had done. Deleting everything I had published. Only to try again a few weeks or months later.
This fixation on perfection can sap motivation and lead to giving up entirely.
If you instead focus on progress rather than perfection, you can maintain motivation. A few steps help along the way:
Tracking incremental progress reminds you of how far you've already come rather than how far you have yet to go.
Celebrating progress points along the way. The “small” wins matter.
Maintaining focus on the next step ahead keeps you in an action-oriented state, rather than overwhelmed by the big picture.
So stay process-driven — chip away at the marble block one bit at a time, write page after page, put in the reps.
Keep your eye on the progress, not the imagined perfection, and you'll reach your goal in due time.
